Asha Vahishta Seminar/Colloquium: #4

Inheriting and Bequeathing Faith

Continuing with the exploration of how faith-identity is constructed, how it is maintained, and how it is transformed; the fourth colloquium in our series turns its attention toward the issue of 'next generation'.

In particular, we shall examine the means and issues surrounding the 'teaching' and 'passing on' of faith, from one generation to the next.  In doing so, we remain committed to deconstructing religion.  Meaning, that in order to properly assess the mode by which religion continues to flourish and exist, we must understand the purpose of faith and faith based community.

Specifically, we tackle the issue of responsibility –

  • Responsibility for teaching faith
  • Responsibility for learning and
  • Responsibility for maintaining traditions, as well as modifying culture

Therefore, this brings us to a discussion of generations (old, young, ancient, contemporary, defined, and in the process of definition).  It also brings up the issues surrounding diaspora.  Hence, time and location are important parameters which will serve as the bench marks for this colloquium discussion.
